The Effects of an Integrative Self-esteem Improvement Program on Self-esteem, Interpersonal Relations, and Quality of Life for Persons with Mental Disorder

Abstract

|
Purpose: This study investigated the effects of integrative self-esteem improvement programs on self-esteem, interpersonal relations, and quality of life for persons with a mental disorder.
Methods: The period of this study was from January 1st to January 31st, 2008. The subjects of this study were selected from persons with a mental disorder at S hospital in D city. There were 48 subjects, 25 for an experimental group and the other 23 for a control group. The research design was a non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design as a quasi-experimental study. Data was analyzed using the SPSS/WIN 12.0 program with chi-square test and repeated measurement ANOVA.
Results: There was a significant change in self-esteem, interpersonal relations, and quality of life in the experimental group after treatment, which was significantly different from those in the control group.
Conclusion: The integrative self-esteem improvement program was effective on improving self-esteem, interpersonal relations, and quality of life for persons with a mental disorder. Therefore, it is recommended that integrative self-esteem improvement programs should be used in clinical practice as an effective nursing intervention for persons with a mental disorder.
